What effect does low temperature have on the performance of downhole lithium batteries?

Cold temperatures can cause a significant decrease in the discharge capacity of a battery. In low temperatures, the chemicals inside the battery become less active and the ionic transport slows down, allowing less power to be released, which may result in the device being underpowered and not functioning properly.

Low temperatures increase the internal resistance of the battery. Increased internal resistance means that more energy is lost as heat during discharge, which reduces the efficiency of the battery's energy utilisation and may also cause the battery to heat up.

Low temperatures may affect the output voltage stability of the battery. Voltage fluctuations may adversely affect downhole equipment that relies on a stable power supply, e.g., by causing unstable operation and malfunctioning of the equipment.
